Sun Pharmaceutical Industries is an Indian multinational pharmaceutical company which was founded by Mr. Dilip Shanghvi in 1983.
In the US Modafinil is sold under the trade name Provigil since 1998. Provigil was the first brand to be introduced in the US for the treatment of narcolepsy and ADHD. Because of Provigil’s high cost, Sun Pharma developed Modalert so that people can afford it at a very cheaper rate. Provigil by Cephalon Inc wasn’t just expensive but it had many downsides which were the reason Modalert had a rise into the pharmaceutical industry. Sun Pharma is the leading producer of Modalert in the pharmaceutical industry.
Provigil though had potential but isn’t without drawbacks:
- It was available as a prescribed only medication, without prescription you cannot buy Provigil
- It has a possibility for increasing a tolerance within the user insensitivity to the drug over a period of time
- It’s possible side effects which may be more important than the benefits for some users
- The cost of Provigil was very high; per pill of Provigil was sold for $4.
The drawbacks of Provigil in the US gave rise to Modalert.
One of the differences between prescribed and non-prescribed substances is the potential they have. Prescribed medications are classified as “schedule substance”. A schedule substance is a law established federal US drug policy under which the retailer, importer, and distribution of certain substance are regulated. Nootropics like Modafinil is primarily used to increase focus and concentration in people suffering from ADHD and sleeping disorder.
Nootropics are drug or supplements mostly used to improve cognitive function, memory enhancement and particularly as a mind booster in healthy individuals. The use of nootropics by healthy individuals without any medical disorder has been a debating topic among neuroscientists, psychiatrists, and physicians. Modafinil is one such nootropic which has been growing rapidly in the pharmaceutical industry.
Modafinil is used for the treatment of sleeping disorder. In 1986 Modafinil was first offered as an experiment for the treatment of narcolepsy in France and later on was approved by the FDA in 1998 for the same disorder in the US and in 2003 for the treatment of shift work disorder and sleep apnea. So far Modafinil has been the most popular prescript medication among smart drugs.
Smart drug users have reported that Modalert not only provides them with wakefulness but also encourage motivation, focus, and concentration. Sun pharmaceuticals who are the main manufacturer of Modalert are most used by users from the US, UK, and Australia.
Modalert is a eugeroic or wakefulness –promoting agent used by people suffering from sleeping disorder like narcolepsy, sleep apnea, and excessive daytime sleepiness. Modalert is a popular drug for its off-label uses. It is used by patients with multiple sclerosis experiencing neurological fatigue. Modalert is very popular among students as “study pill”; as it is a cognitive enhancer and helps gain concentration which can be benefiting to students during exams. Modalert has been considered effective for the treatment of ADHD in adults but is not approved by the FDA officially as it has soon allergic symptoms. The US Air Force have permitted Modalert for pilots during important operation, as the effectiveness of Modalert would help them to be alert and stay awake for a longer time.
The effectiveness Modalert gives compared to other eugeroic drugs is better and it shows mild side effects. The development of Modalert as an alternate to Provigil is one of the reasons why Modalert rules the Modafinil market.
