Modafinil Research

In the 1970s a neurophysiologist professor Michel Jouvet and Lafon laboratories developed Modafinil during the invention of a series of benzhydryl sulfinyl compounds, including Adrafinil. Modafinil is the main metabolite of Adrafinil. Adrafinil was first offered as an experimental treatment for narcolepsy in 1986. Adrafinil, in order to show its effects, has to produce a substance in the metabolizing process; this substance was later known as Modafinil. Modafinil was found more effective compared to Adrafinil in effectiveness and unlike Adrafinil, it doesn’t harm the liver.

Modafinil is a wakefulness agent which is used for the treatment of sleeping disorder like narcolepsy, sleep apnea, and excessive daytime sleepiness, but to be approved for the treatment, Modafinil went through a series of experiment in order to be approved. It was considered to be effective for other disorder like ADHD, weight loss and many others.



DPD or depersonalization disorder also knows as depersonalization is a mental disorder or illness where a person has constant or regular feelings of detachment from one’s surroundings, mental process or body e.g. (A feeling of being in a dream). Modafinil used alone has been effective in a subgroup of people suffering from depersonalization, but the most likely to respond were those who showed attention impairments and hypersomnia. However, clinical trials have not been conducted for the treatment of depersonalization. But as stated by Dr. Evan Torch a combination of SSRI and Modafinil can help depersonalization disorder.


ADHD/ Cognitive

There was a difference in opinion about whether the cognitive effects of Modafinil are plenty to consider it to be a cognitive enhancer. The researchers later agreed that Modafinil improves some characteristic; also it reduces the symptoms of ADHD.

However, it is not recommended for children’s due to major concerns over the happening of Stevens- Johnson syndrome in clinical trials.



Psychiatric disorders


Modafinil is considered to be an effective for the treatment of patients suffering from seasonal affective disorder like;

  • Fatigue
  • Depression
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Schizophrenia
  • Bipolar depression
  • Cocaine dependence


A randomized double-blind study of Modafinil showed that individuals who were healthy and normal in their earlier 40s showed improvement in alertness as well as improved mood. The conclusion verified that Modafinil may have common mood uplifting effects particularly in the use for the treatment of resistant depression.


Cocaine addiction

Modafinil has undergone many studies to find a possible method for the treatment of cocaine dependence. The experiment was a double-blind controlled study which 12 weeks of treatment and a 4 week of the follow-up study. There were 210 individuals who underwent the treatment having an analysis of cocaine dependence out of which 69 for 200mg Modafinil, and 69 for 400mg and rest 72 individuals for randomized to placebo was taken once daily. The individuals came for review and urine screens and had one hour of therapy weekly.

The most important result determines the weekly percentage of cocaine non-use days.

These data collected of Modafinil in combination with individual behavioral therapy was effective for ever-increasing cocaine non-use days in participants without liquor dependence and in reducing cocaine craving.


Weight loss

Studies on Modafinil for weight loss indicated that Modafinil is considered as appetite suppressor but it hasn’t been completely approved as there are studies being conducted on it.
